An example of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is omeprazole, which is used to treat peptic ulcers and other conditions associated with excessive stomach acid production. Peptic ulcers are open sores that form in the lining of the stomach or small intestine as a result of the erosive action of stomach acid and other digestive fluids on the protective mucosal layer.
By preventing the stomach's acid from being produced, omeprazole works to lessen the pain and swelling brought on by peptic ulcers. Ordinarily, omeprazole is prescribed as an enteric-coated tablet or capsule containing tiny pellets of the drug.
The enteric coating makes sure that the medication is absorbed in the small intestine, where it can be most effective, and protects it from the stomach's acidic environment. Until the ulcer heals, omeprazole is typically taken once daily for a few weeks or months, preferably in the morning before food.
